Specialized S sizing has been causing a lot of confusion for our customers here at J’s Cycles. So we created a helpful guide to clear things up.

What is S-Sizing?

S-Sizing came around in 2018, when the Stump Jumper Evo got released by Specialized. The S-sizing is a specific MTB sizing found on the Stumpjumper, Enduro, Demo, Status, Levo, Levo SL, Kenevo and Kenevo SL bike range. When you look at the S-Sizing chart it looks like Specialized have just rebranded the sizing. However there is a lot more to it than just changing L (for large) to S4.

S-Sizing compared with standard sizing.

Thanks to the S-Sizing a rider can now choose the right size frame depending on their style of riding. This benefits the rider more and is much simpler. Bike sizing has traditionally been based on the rider’s height and inside leg length. This only gives a rider 1 or 2 options of frame sizes to buy. A smaller frame will have a shorter wheel base and lower stand-over height. Whereas a Larger Frame will have a longer wheel base and top tube. However now with the S-Sizing guide not only can you buy a bike that will fit you perfectly, but now can also suit your style of riding.

Specialized bikes maintain a lower stack height with a shorter seat tube length, whilst the reach and the wheelbase will slowly increase the chart. A rider can now fit across various sizes comfortably with the added stand over. The rider’s size choice is based on how the bike handles to give you a better experience on the bike.

When to Size up.

With the Specialized S-sizing system the time to size up would be if you prefer a more stable, planted feel on the descents, ride aggressively at higher speeds, or prioritise straight-line control over tight manoeuvrability. Since the S-sizing keeps seat tube lengths relatively consistent across sizes, sizing up will not drastically affect the stand over height or pedalling position. But it will give you longer reach and wheel base.

This is ideal for the riders who like more room in the cockpit, better weight distribution on technical terrain, or simply enjoy a more stretched out riding posture. For your riding goals make sure the fit still aligns with your comfort on the bike.

When to size down?

Or you could drop down to an S3 frame. This would be if you wanted a nimbler bike, for more response on cornering, a more playful bike. Suggested for if you were taking on a bike park, wanting to whip and jump your bike. Or if you wanted a bike for the trails that have slower, more technical features.

This all means that riders now have more control and options over their riding experience.
